A grotesque, grimacing terracotta mask. This type of mask, inherited from the Phoenicians, was placed in tombs to protect the dead from demons (H. 18 cm, W. 16 cm, Dermech Necropolis, Carthage, late 8th century–early 7th century, Carthage Museum).
