Mosaic of Venus emerging from a seashell, mid-2nd century AD. The Archaeological Museum of El Djem, the ancient city of Thysdrus, was established on the site of a Roman villa, whose spatial layout it recreates: a central courtyard surrounded by a peristyle—a colonnaded courtyard—that provides access to the rooms. On display there are artifacts—sculptures, mosaic panels, ceramics, and more—from excavations conducted in Thysdrus as well as in the surrounding area.
