January 29: Rapper El Général unites Tunisian youth through his songs. El Général is the stage name of Hamada Ben Amor, a 22-year-old rapper whose songs have become the anthem of Tunisia’s protest-minded youth. In late December, El General had posted a song online titled “Raïs Lebled” (“The Leader of the Country”), which directly called out Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali on the country’s social deprivation, the regime’s violence, and youth unemployment. This led to his arrest and imprisonment for a few days during the week of January 14; he was released after Ben Ali fled.
