Together with his immediate family—his mother, uncle, brother, and sisters—and friends from the neighborhood, a ceremony was held to mark the 40th day since Mohamed Bouazizi’s death. In Muslim culture, the 40th day is the day when the soul of the deceased leaves earth to enter paradise; it is also the day when relatives must accept the departure of their loved one—the day when the period of mourning is declared over. On this day, close relatives gather to eat at the home of the deceased’s family.
