Together with his immediate family—his mother, uncle, brother, and sisters—and friends from the neighborhood, they commemorate the 40th day since Mohamed Bouazizi’s death. In Muslim culture, the 40th day is the day when the soul of the deceased leaves the earth to enter paradise, but it is also the day when relatives must accept the departure of their loved one—the day when the mourning period is officially declared over. On this day, close relatives gather to eat at the home of the deceased’s family.
