August 15, 2011: Abdessalem JRAD, Secretary General of the UGGT, and Ahmed BRAHIM, Secretary General of the Ettajdid Democratic Party, at the UGGT rally. The Tunisian General Labor Union (UGGT) organized a protest march “to achieve the goals of the revolution and in memory of the martyrs,” which began at noon on Monday, August 15, 2011, in front of the Labor Exchange in Tunis, proceeded along Mohamed V Avenue, and ended in front of Human Rights Square. Participants in the march included the Union’s regional and local grassroots organizations, political parties, national figures, civil society groups, intellectuals, and artists. The demonstrators voiced social and political demands, calling in particular for the resignation of the transitional government and for those symbolizing corruption to be held accountable—specifically through the restitution of public assets plundered by the family of the ousted president, judicial reform, and jobs for the unemployed. The demonstrators denounced rising prices and called for respect for the principles of the revolution and loyalty to the blood of the martyrs. The march was marked by a symbolic stop in front of the headquarters of the former, now-dissolved Constitutional Democratic Rally. “Free Tunisia—thieves out!” “People, rise up against the remnants of the dictatorship!” “No freedom, no return for the Destour gangs!” the demonstrators chanted.
