September 6, 2011: At Kasbah Square, police officers protested and occupied Government Square for a demonstration and sit-in. The police officers even entered the Prime Minister’s Office, demanding that the interim Prime Minister, Mr. Béji Caïd Essebsi, apologize for remarks he made that morning during his press conference, in which he called for the dissolution of law enforcement unions. In an address to the Tunisian people, the prime minister announced, to that end, a series of security measures, particularly the strict enforcement of the state of emergency in effect since the January 14 revolution. The government, he said, “will no longer tolerate practices that risk paralyzing the daily lives of Tunisians, such as blocking roads, attacking police stations and government facilities in the regions, and assaulting the national security forces and the army.” In this context, the Prime Minister announced the suspension of all union activities by the security forces and the dissolution of their union. He expressed surprise at the content of the statement released by the Union of Internal Security Forces, which, he noted, contained “insinuations of rebellion.”
