September 22: Samir’s family—his wife Leila and his mother Rafia—appeared before the Military Court in Tunis, where a large rally was held in support of Samir Feriani during his ongoing trial. Late in the morning, the military court decided to release Samir Feriani on provisional bail despite the serious charges against him. Samir Feriani is a Tunisian police officer who has been incarcerated since late May for claiming that “Ben Ali’s criminals” were still operating within the Ministry of the Interior. At the conclusion of the first hearing of his trial for “undermining state security” before the Tunis Military Court, Samir Feriani, 44, was released on provisional bail, and the trial was adjourned until September 29. This decision was met with an outpouring of joy from the dozens of family members and supporters who had gathered outside the courthouse early that morning. His family, including his three children, were in tears, and his aunt fainted. “This is a victory for human rights, for freedom of expression, and for all of Tunisia,” said Leila Feriani, the officer’s wife.
