December 3, 2011: Women wearing niqabs and holding copies of the Quran came to protest in favor of an Islamic state and the right to wear the niqab on the third day of the Bardo 1 sit-in. A new confrontation arose, with the sit-in protesters on one side—protesting the internal political maneuvering within the Constituent Assembly—and, on the other side, more than 2,000 Ennahda activists who had come to support the new government and keep in check about a hundred aggressive Salafists. The day’s clashes were purely verbal, thanks to Ennahda’s impressive security detail, which, together with the police, managed to contain the Salafists who, once night fell, attacked the sit-in protesters protected by the police.
