March 26: Press conference by Rached Ghannouchi, president of the Ennahda Party, at the Ennahda Party headquarters. Rached Ghannouchi announced that the decision to retain Article 1 of the 1959 Tunisian Constitution unchanged in the new constitution was approved by a majority of 52 members of the Ennahda Party’s Constituent Committee. “Many Tunisians do not understand Sharia. Some are even afraid of it because they know nothing about it. So why all this debate over Sharia, which risks dividing Tunisians into two camps? Sharia is, after all, merely an expression of Islam. The essential point is that Islam be mentioned in the text of the constitution as the religion of the Tunisian state,” said Mr. Ghannouchi.
