April 15: In a family that makes a living collecting plastic in Moulares, in southwestern Tunisia, the results of the CPG hiring competition are set against the backdrop of social realities. The extremely high unemployment rate in this region—where job opportunities are limited to the CPG and the state has abandoned the area—is the cause of widespread poverty. The residents’ hopes rest entirely on the CPG, a phosphate company, but it is also the root cause of their misery and social tension. The November results were suspended and the applications reviewed. The results were announced on April 14 in Moulares, and clashes broke out near the main phosphate processing plant and the border crossing into Algeria. The protesters, mostly young people, are demanding that certain applications be reviewed and that the police leave the city, with only the army remaining to guard public institutions. 605 operational staff members were recruited.
