April 15: In the working-class neighborhoods of Moulares, in southwestern Tunisia, many homes have been weakened by explosions in the mines, putting their residents at risk. The results of the CPG hiring exam: a clash between expectations and social reality. Very high unemployment in this region—where job opportunities are limited to the CPG and the state has abandoned the area—is the cause of widespread poverty. All the residents’ hopes rest with the CPG, a phosphate company, yet it is also the root cause of their misery and social tension. On November 23, 2011, following the announcement of the CPG recruitment exam results in Moulares, rioters set fire to the company’s technical facilities. The November results were suspended and the applications re-evaluated. The results were announced on April 14 in Moulares, and clashes broke out near the main phosphate processing plant and the border crossing into Algeria. The protesters, mostly young people, are demanding that certain applications be reviewed and that the police leave the city, with only the military remaining to guard public institutions. A total of 605 operational staff were recruited.
