April 15: In the working-class neighborhoods of Moulares, in southwestern Tunisia, living conditions are very difficult—houses are dilapidated, and the water and soil are contaminated with phosphate. These families’ only hope is to secure a job at the CPG. The results of the CPG hiring exam: a clash between expectations and social reality. Very high unemployment in this region—with job opportunities limited to the CPG and the state’s neglect—is the cause of widespread poverty. All the residents’ hopes rest with the CPG, a phosphate company, but it is also the root cause of their misery and social tension. On November 23, 2011, following the announcement of the CPG recruitment exam results in Moulares, rioters set fire to the company’s technical facilities. The November results were suspended and the applications reviewed. The results were announced on April 14 in Moulares, and clashes broke out near the main phosphate processing plant and the border crossing into Algeria. The protesters, mostly young people, are demanding that certain applications be reviewed and that the police leave the city, with only the army remaining to guard public institutions. A total of 605 operational staff were recruited.
