September 14, 2012: Security measures were in place as protesters arrived during the attack on the U.S. Embassy in the Berges du Lac neighborhood by Salafists acting on the orders of their leader, Abu Ayad. The clash between police and protesters demonstrating against the film “The Innocence of Muslims” lasted nearly three hours, marked by exchanges of tear gas and live rounds fired by the police and stones thrown by the protesters. The toll: two people shot dead and about fifty injured on both sides.
