September 20, 2012: Press conference by Béji Caid Essebsi, president of Nida Tounès, amid heavy security and a large number of journalists at a hotel in Berges du Lac. BCE came across as often aggressive, at times scathing, as he spoke about the two most significant current events: the attack on the U.S. embassy and the controversy surrounding the political timeline following October 23, 2012. In his view, everything indicates that “the current government has no intention of respecting either the legal deadline of October 23 or the political and moral commitment to complete the drafting of the Constitution within one year.” Noting that the democratic transition process has come to a standstill, he drew laughter from the audience by stating, “The largest government in Tunisia’s history is, in fact, the largest in the entire world… in terms of the number of its ministers.”
