September 21: A Friday under extremely tight security. One week after the attack on the U.S. Embassy and a few days after the publication of the Charlie Hebdo cartoons, downtown Tunis is under extremely tight police and military surveillance. Exceptional security measures are in place to protect diplomatic and consular buildings as well as foreign schools. Here, at the exit of the famous El Fatha Mosque in the heart of Tunis—a mosque where Salafists traditionally gather— After the main prayers, police are blocking all access to Habib Bourguiba Avenue, where the French Embassy is located.
