October 6, 2012: Clashes between Tunisian law enforcement and demonstrators protesting the reopening of a landfill on the island of Djerba left 49 police officers injured today, according to Khaled Tarrouche, a spokesperson for the Ministry of the Interior. The protest was sparked by the local authorities’ decision to keep a highly polluting landfill open until 2013.
