October 22, 2012: Members of Parliament who have been on strike since the end of the session take part in the demonstration. More than 3,000 people gathered peacefully on Monday on Habib Bourguiba Avenue in Tunis to denounce political violence and the authoritarian drift of the Islamist-dominated government, a few days after the death of a political opponent. At the call of the opposition troika—Nidaa Tounes, Al Jomhouri, and Al Massar— the chanted slogans denounced extremism and political violence—which they equated with terrorism and dictatorship—and called for the dissolution of the Committees for the Protection of the Revolution, which they hold responsible for the assassination of Lotfi Nagdh, the Nidaa Tounes coordinator in Tataouine, on October 18. Moreover, a portrait of the deceased is being held aloft by the demonstrators.
