Hundreds of police officers, along with the families of fallen officers, dismissed officers, and many citizens, demonstrated this morning on Bourguiba Avenue in Tunis at the call of the SNFSI, the National Union of Internal Security Forces. The demonstrators demanded more resources to combat terrorism. A symbolic funeral for police officers killed in clashes with terrorists was held at Martyrs’ Square at the Ministry of the Interior. On Saturday, the SNFSI had issued a de facto ultimatum to the government, demanding the removal of senior officials whom they accused of being subservient to Islamists and the reinstatement of officials dismissed after the January 2011 revolution within 48 hours. This move was denounced and described as a “threat of rebellion” by the MI.
