December 13, 2013: A rally and march in support of Jabeur Mejri were organized yesterday by the Tunisian Association of Democratic Women (ATFD), the Jabeur Support Committee (Movement 13), the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), the Euro-Med Network, the Tunisian Human Rights League (LTDH), the Défi Association, and the Tunisian Organization for Citizenship (OTC). Sentenced in the first instance on March 28, 2012, and then on appeal on June 25 of that year, to seven and a half years in prison for posting cartoons deemed blasphemous on his Facebook wall, Jabeur Mejri can now only count on a presidential pardon to regain his freedom (he has decided not to appeal to the Court of Cassation). All his supporters had hoped that International Human Rights Day on December 10 would provide the ideal opportunity for such an act of clemency. Once again, their hopes have been dashed.
