On January 13, 2014, in the National Constituent Assembly, the debate over articles relating to the judiciary sparked a heated controversy and several incidents during the session in which some members of parliament nearly came to blows. Brahim Gassas, an independent deputy (formerly of Nidaa Tounes), rose from his seat and walked toward Mahmoud Baroudi’s seat, removing his jacket as if preparing for a fight. Mr. Gassas rebuked the Democratic Alliance representative, saying, “Can’t you see we’re women here?!” implying that the lawmakers were by no means too weak to yield to his threat.
