January 14, 2014: Activists from the Leagues for the Protection of the Revolution (LPR) stirred things up by placing portraits of Ben Ali on the ground—which were gleefully trampled on—onHabib Bourguiba Avenue in Tunis; several thousand Tunisians gathered to commemorate the third anniversary of former President Ben Ali’s departure, the culmination of regional uprisings that began on December 17, 2010. People of all political stripes mingled and squabbled along the avenue: on one side, the Islamists with Ennahda, the leagues, and even a new anarchist Islamist movement; on the other, the left and the opposition, commemorating both the ouster of the old regime and the memory of the revolution’s martyrs and political martyrs.
