January 14, 2014: A tribute to the political martyrs of 2013 was held on Habib Bourguiba Avenue in Tunis, where several thousand Tunisians gathered to commemorate the third anniversary of former President Ben Ali’s departure, the culmination of the regional uprisings that began on December 17, 2010. People of all political stripes mingled and squabbled along the avenue: on one side, the Islamists—including Ennahda, the leagues, and even a new anarchist Islamist movement; on the other, the left and the opposition, commemorating both the departure of the former regime and the memory of the revolution’s martyrs and political martyrs.
