January 14, 2014: A very heavy police presence was deployed to prevent any clashes between Ennahda activists and opposition protesters; the police deployment was impressive alongHabib Bourguiba Avenue in Tunis; several thousand Tunisians gathered to commemorate the third anniversary of former President Ben Ali’s departure, the culmination of the regional uprisings that began on December 17, 2010. People of all political stripes are mingling and squabbling along the avenue: on one side, the Islamists—including Ennahdha, the leagues, and even a new anarchist Islamist movement; on the other, the left and the opposition, commemorating both the ousting of the former regime and the memory of the revolution’s martyrs and political martyrs.
