April 16, 2014: Hundreds of people, including families of martyrs and civil society groups, demonstrated in Tunis to protest the lenient sentences handed down by the military court against former officials of the Ben Ali regime in the case involving protesters killed and injured during the 2011 revolution. “The people demand justice for the martyrs,” “What a shame, what a shame—the criminals are free!” chanted the demonstrators. The procession, led by family members of the victims and those who were injured, marched from the Bab Saadoun Military Court of Appeals in Tunis to the National Constituent Assembly in Bardo. “We will no longer trust the military justice system,” proclaimed a large poster. “I don’t care about the court’s verdicts. I demand vengeance for my son’s blood,” shouted the father of a young man killed in Menzel Bourguiba.
