This was the first meeting of the 217 members of the Assembly of the Representatives of the People (ARP) elected on October 26, an election won by the Nidaa Tounes party (86 seats) over the Islamist Ennahda party (69 seats), which had held the majority until then. This first meeting was presided over by longtime activist Ali Ben Salem, in his capacity as the senior-most member of this new assembly.
