December 2, 2014: “With God’s blessing, we are opening this first session of the Assembly of the Representatives of the People, and I call upon Ali Ben Salem to preside,” said Mr. Ben Jaafar, who, as the senior member of Parliament, was the ex officio chair of the first session, before stepping down from the presiding officer’s seat. This was the first meeting of the 217 members of the Assembly of the Representatives of the People (ARP) elected on October 26, an election won by the Nidaa Tounès party (86 seats) ahead of the Islamist Ennahda party (69 seats), which had held a majority until then. This first meeting was presided over by longtime activist Ali Ben Salem, in his capacity as the senior-most member of this new assembly.
