September 12, 2015: Hamma Hammami, Popular Front: On Habib Bourguiba Avenue, the demonstration against the reconciliation law finally took place, despite bans issued by the Ministry of the Interior and the Prime Minister’s Office, despite terrorist alerts issued by the government, and despite opposition from left-wing parties. three successive marches took place along the avenue. Nearly 4,000 divided but committed demonstrators chanted slogans against the ruling coalition of Nidaa Tounes and Ennahda to protest the economic reconciliation law, which proposes to drop charges against any person —whether civil servants or businesspeople—who benefited, in cash or in kind, from financial embezzlement during the Ben Ali years, provided they reimburse the state for the estimated amount of the loss. Despite fears of police crackdowns, the demonstrations took place peacefully and without clashes.
