January 27, 2016: Sabra Abaidi’s son showed us around his home and explained his living conditions, along with his entire family—his son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren. This is the working-class, underprivileged neighborhood of Karma, located in the hills above Kasserine. Here, people live surrounded by trash and build their homes haphazardly, even spilling into the wadis. Families live crammed into houses that are indeed made of solid materials but are in a state of extreme disrepair—no windows, no doors, no heating, and no running water for some. The children’s only playground is the trash.
