January 27, 2016: Saadi, Ridha Yahyaoui’s mother, at the family home. On Saturday, January 16, in front of the governorate headquarters, while his colleagues were celebrating their new jobs, Ridha Yahyaoui was in shock. His name had been crossed off the list without explanation. He climbed an electric pole and threatened to kill himself. He was electrocuted on the spot. That same evening, Ridha died at the hospital in Sfax, where he had been transferred. A native of the Karma neighborhood in Kasserine, Ridha, 26, a senior electrical mechanics technician, had been unemployed for five years. Active in the region’s movement for unemployed college graduates, he took part in a sit-in at the governorate headquarters in early February 2015. On February 16, 2015, the sit-in participants signed an agreement with the local government. Eleven months later, the unemployed sit-in protesters were finally summoned to the governorate to sign their employment contracts. In the meantime, the list had changed. The lead delegate crossed out six names—including Ridha’s—and replaced them with eleven new people.
