January 29, 2016: Hosni Kaliya set himself on fire on January 6, 2011, after being beaten twice by police officers in Kasserine. Five years later, Hosni, who suffered burns over his entire body, must live every day with constant pain and the harsh judgment of society. He currently lives in a state-run shelter while awaiting transfer to Italy to undergo several surgeries and receive prosthetics. Two months ago, his younger brother set himself on fire in Kasserine and died. Self-immolation has become a frequent occurrence in Tunisia, partly as an imitation of Mohamed Bouazizi, but mostly as an act of desperation by a society and a youth that have been abandoned (113 self-immolations in 2015).
