February 25, 2016: Baligh Aloui, 33, set himself on fire on Thursday, January 21, in front of his family home, where he lives with his parents, brothers, and sister. His brother, Abdelsattar, saved him by throwing himself on top of him. He suffered second-degree burns to his face and hands. He set himself on fire on Thursday, January 21, the day after the government announced the creation of 5,000 jobs in Kasserine. That day, unemployed people rushed to the governorate, district offices, and city halls to register, driven by new hope of finally securing a job, stable employment, and a decent income... This influx led to chaos, overcrowding, and tensions... This young man, finding himself once again rejected by the administration and by the state, returned home with a bottle of gasoline and set himself on fire in the street in front of his house, in front of his mother, brothers, and sisters. He owes his survival to his brother, who was able to put out the fire very quickly, but this young man is scarred for life, with second-degree burns covering his entire face—all amid the total indifference of society and the government. In 2015, 113 people set themselves on fire in Tunisia.
