November 1, 2016: Moringa leaves—a new crop that is profitable, fast-growing, and well-suited to Tunisia’s climate—which Sarah Toumi is helping farmers in Bir Salah and other regions of Tunisia cultivate. Since she was 11 years old, Sarah Toumi has been a firm believer in collective action. In 2008, she founded Dream, a “network for exchange and action for development” aimed at young people. Now 29, Sarah Toumi left Paris in 2012 to return to the Tunisian countryside and reconnect with her childhood memories. Unable to forget the inequality and poverty that prevailed in Bir Salah—her grandfather’s village in the Sfax region (central Tunisia)—she created Acacias for All, a “social enterprise.” Her goal: to reduce the water shortage in this community affected by climate change. This initiative earned Sarah Toumi the distinction of being the only Arab and African woman to appear on the 2016 global list of the top 30 entrepreneurs under 30, compiled by the American magazine Forbes.
