May 27, 2017: Several hundred people gathered late in the day in front of the Prime Minister’s office at Kasbah Square to call for unconditional support for Prime Minister Youssef Chahed as part of his government’s “fight against corruption,” which began a few days earlier. Although initially organized by civil society, the rally featured a strong presence and organization by political parties, with slogans even directed against political Islam and, indirectly, the Islamist Ennahda Party—despite its alliance with Nidaa Tounes within the government. Other slogans celebrated the emergence of a young leader who represents hope for a segment of the population; “GO Jo” could be seen on signs, as well as “Saya9” (a thorough cleansing) and “the people are with you.” The Prime Minister, who was expected to join the rally, canceled his appearance at the last minute, much to the disappointment of the demonstrators present.
