June 11, 2017: Chemseddine Marzoug and Mohamed Trabelsi at the Tunisian Red Crescent office in Zarzis put on their gear to recover the bodies of migrants. In Zarzis, on the Tunisian coast near the Libyan border, Chemseddine Marzoug, a former fisherman who is now unemployed, has been volunteering for 10 years to give those who have drowned in the Mediterranean a burial in the sand. As volunteers for the Tunisian Red Crescent, Chemseddine and his colleague Mohamed Trabelsi have spent the last 10 years burying the bodies of migrants found at sea or washed up on the beaches of southern Tunisia in a makeshift cemetery at a municipal landfill. This spring, the death toll has been very high—27 bodies were recovered last month.
