October 16, 2017: The mother of young Ahmed, who died at sea, cannot shake her despair. Ahmed Hattay, a 21-year-old man, died when their boat collided with a Tunisian military vessel during an illegal crossing to Italy. Family and neighbors gather daily to mourn together. “We’re poor here; we don’t have any work,” his father, Magtouf Hattay, tells us repeatedly. On the night of October 8–9, 2017, a fishing boat carrying more than 90 Tunisian undocumented migrants was “accidentally” struck (according to official sources), resulting in the deaths and disappearances of about 50 young Tunisians; the others were rescued by that same Tunisian vessel.
