October 16, 2017: Omm Choucha is a small village with one main street, a mosque, a post office, and two grocery stores that are open in the morning. This village has seen its young people flee clandestinely to Italy—nearly 200 in the month of September 2017 alone. Today, it is counting the dead and survivors of the boat sunk by a Tunisian military vessel. On the night of October 8–9, 2017, a fishing boat carrying more than 90 undocumented Tunisian migrants was “accidentally” struck (according to an official source), resulting in the deaths and disappearances of about 50 young Tunisians; the others were rescued by that same Tunisian vessel.
