October 16, 2017: the downtown area of Bir Ali, the region’s largest city, located 50 km from Sfax, from which—in September alone—more than 500 young undocumented migrants set out for Italy. On the night of October 8–9, 2017, a fishing boat carrying more than 90 Tunisian undocumented migrants was “accidentally” struck (according to official sources), resulting in the deaths and disappearances of about 50 young Tunisians; the others were rescued by that same Tunisian vessel.
