January 14, 2018: Commemoration on Habib Bourguiba Avenue in Tunis marking the 7th anniversary of the Tunisian Revolution and Ben Ali’s departure. Amid high social tensions and clashes between young people and police in several Tunisian cities over the past week, the day was surprisingly calm, with few demonstrators and few social demands in the face of a very heavy police presence. Some expressed their pride, but others mainly voiced their anger at the persistence of the ills—poverty, unemployment, and corruption—that had led to the fall of the dictatorship. Members of the citizens’ group “Manich Msamah” (“I Will Not Forgive”) marched while holding up photos of the revolution’s “martyrs,” while young people demonstrated for jobs. Political parties had set up booths.
