February 1, 2018: Speech by Emmanuel Macron before members of the ARP (Assembly of People’s Representatives) at the Bardo in Tunisia. After emphasizing that Tunisia’s challenges are primarily economic, the French president stated that “painful reforms are necessary for Tunisia to become a truly attractive destination.” From 2016 to 2020, France’s aid for Tunisia’s economic recovery totaled 1.2 billion euros, with an additional 500 million euros allocated for 2020–2022. “If you fail, we fail” was the phrase Macron repeated throughout his 24-hour state visit.
