March 10, 2018: Nearly 2,000 people demonstrated in Tunis to demand an end to the “injustice” that imposes unequal inheritance rights between men and women. This was the first major demonstration in Tunisia and the Arab world calling for gender equality and, above all, equality in inheritance. Under Tunisian law—which in this case is based on the precepts of the Quran—women inherit only half the share of men of the same degree of kinship. On August 13, 2017, President Béji Caïd Essebsi announced his desire to achieve “equality in all areas” in Tunisia. To this end, he established a “Commission on Equality and Individual Freedoms” tasked with considering reforms to the legal framework to eliminate provisions that infringe on individual freedoms or lead to discrimination.
