July 25, 2019: At 10:00 a.m. outside the military hospital in Tunis, the death of President Béji Caïd Essebsi was officially announced at the military hospital in Tunis on this Republic Day. There was a flurry of activity in the Assembly of the Representatives of the People; according to the Constitution, the Speaker of the Assembly is the interim successor to the late president. A succession of political figures visited the office of Assembly President Mohamed Ennaceur before he was sworn in at the end of the day as President of the Republic for a three-month interim term, during which early presidential elections will be organized.
