October 6, 2019: On election day for Tunisia’s legislative elections, Seifeddine Makhlouf—a lawyer, a candidate eliminated in the first round of the presidential election, and spokesperson for the Al Karama coalition, an Islamist movement with ties to the youth of the revolution—went to cast his vote at his polling place in the working-class neighborhood of Bab Jedid in Tunis. That evening, his party would emerge as the surprise of the elections, finishing in third place and winning nearly 20 seats in the ARP, according to polling organizations.
