October 23, 2019: Kais Saied, the new president of the republic elected on October 13, arrived at the Assembly of the Representatives of the People to take the oath of office and deliver a speech. Before a packed chamber—including members of parliament, government officials, political figures, and ambassadors— Kais Saied declared that Tunisia had carried out a “true revolution, in a new sense of the word, because revolutions are generally waged against legitimacy, but what happened in Tunisia was a true revolution that utilized the very tools of legitimacy themselves.” In his view, “everyone here bears a responsibility—the responsibility to respond to the people in their demand for freedom and dignity. The wait has been all too long, and no one has the right to disappoint them.”
