The Assembly of the Representatives of the People held its first plenary session of the new legislative term on Wednesday, following the October 6 elections, under the chairmanship of the senior-most member of the Assembly, Rached Ghannouchi, president of the Ennahda Party and candidate for the presidency of the ARP. After some heated initial exchanges—particularly from Representative Abir Moussi—the representatives elected Rached Ghannouchi as the new President of the ARP with 123 votes out of 217, thanks to last-minute support from Nabil Karoui’s party, Qalb Tounes, despite an anti-Ennahdha campaign. Samira Chaouchi, a member of the Qalb Tounes party, was then elected vice president of the ARP.
