July 12, 2020: Profile of Emna Charki, a young Tunisian blogger facing legal charges for a Facebook post deemed to constitute “incitement to hatred between religions and a call for discrimination”; she faces up to three years in prison, with the verdict set for July 13. Here in her apartment while she’s in the process of moving—her landlord refusing to house a “kafir” (“unbeliever”)—she proudly displays her 2012 tattoo that reads “out law” (“outlaw”). On July 14, she was sentenced to six months in prison without parole for inciting hatred between religions and fined 2,000 dinars (€620) for desecration of the sacred. Her lawyers have filed an appeal.
