Ten years ago, on December 17, 2010, Mohamed Bouazizi, a young unemployed man and street vendor selling vegetables, set himself on fire in front of the governorate building in the city center. This marked the beginning of protests by union members across the region—the start of the Tunisian revolution that would culminate on January 14, 2011, with the departure of the dictatorial President Ben Ali and his family. “Work, Freedom, and Dignity”—these three words from the 2010 revolutionaries’ slogan are still chanted today in the streets of Tunisia.
