December 8, 2020: Healthcare workers marched in Tunis from their ministry to the Prime Minister’s Office to protest the dire state of a public sector plagued by underfunding and a brain drain. “Exhausted staff, hospitals in danger,” “Shame on you,” “Public health in free fall”: several thousand healthcare workers in white coats held up these signs and chanted “Step down” at the Minister of Health, all in defense of the hospital system. The death, overnight from Thursday to Friday, of a 26-year-old doctor who fell into a malfunctioning elevator while on call at the Jendouba Hospital served as the spark for public-sector healthcare workers, who have been suffering for years.
