July 26, 2021, 3:00 a.m.: Following the announcement the previous evening by President Kais Saied that the Assembly’s activities would be suspended and that the head of government and his cabinet members would be dismissed, Rached Ghannouchi, president of the Assembly and of the Islamist Ennahda Party, went to the Assembly with a few members of parliament. They found themselves facing closed gates and an Assembly controlled by the military, who barred him from entering the parliament building. He then organized a sit-in in front of the Assembly gates and called on his supporters to join him in order to regain power.
