January 14, 2022: Jaouhar M'Barek, leader of the citizens' movement against Kais Saeid, was assaulted by police. On this anniversary of the revolution and the departure of former President Ben Ali in 2011, opponents of current President Kais Saied had been calling for a protest in Tunis for several days. Following the president’s imposition the previous evening of a curfew and a ban on demonstrations as part of COVID-19 health protocols, the risk of clashes was real. Early in the morning, Tunis was cordoned off by thousands of police officers, blocking access to downtown Tunis, but nearly 2,000 protesters still managed to reach the lower end of the avenue after clashing with police and breaking through police barricades, despite the police’s use of water cannons, tear gas, and batons. This was the first major clash between police and protesters in Tunis in 10 years.
